The National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP)’s collaborative project Construction Logistics and Community Safety – Australia (CLOCS-A) will receive key funding through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, supported by the Federal Government. The NRSPP is hosted by Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC).
CLOCS-A is led by a broad Steering Group consisting of Amy Gillett Foundation, Australian Road Research Board, ARTSA-i, Australian Trucking Association, Bicycle Queensland, MUARC, Major Transport Infrastructure Authority, Sydney Metro, The Charted Institute of Logistics and Transport – Australia, Transport for NSW, Transport for London, Truck Industry Council and Victorian Department of Transport which the NRSPP Chairs.
The CLOCS-A project will improve road safety for all road users through providing industry with a consistent good practice standard for the management of safety in construction logistics. In the UK, the single standard gave industry confidence to invest in heavy vehicle safety features and enabled improved driver training to encourage safer interactions with vulnerable road users, whilst shaping a culture where all stakeholders in construction take responsibility for health & safety “beyond the [construction site] hoardings.”
The project will be industry-led and aims to fundamentally improve how the construction industry manages road safety. This project is one of 28 successful heavy vehicle safety initiatives to receive funding from $5.2 million in Round 6 of the HVSI.
NRSPP Jerome Carslake said the HVSI funding would enable the CLOCS-A Steering Group to collaboratively deliver the standard, and improve heavy vehicle safety for drivers, the community, operators and/or the supply chain.
“Australia is undergoing an unprecedented $200 billion major infrastructure build in our cities for at least a decade. And, key to its success is trucks, without them none of these can be delivered. Introducing a CLOCS-A would provide a single standard for all these major projects, it’s a win for industry and the community.
CLOCS-A is built on collaboration, it brings together a vast array of stakeholders including industry, government, major contractors, community groups and will be able to draw on Transport for London who collaboratively developed CLOCS in 2015.
NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the HVSI program supported key initiatives that deliver tangible safety improvements for the heavy vehicle industry and all road users.
